10 Steps to Self Care in an Hour (or less)

February 7, 2025

In a world where a 40 hour work week barely covers rent, the United States president is... well, himself, and whose of us with uteruses are losing access to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", it's understandable that you'd be too frazzled to take care of yourself.

The Play Club is here to remind you that self-care is necessary to the revolution. You can’t fight back for long if you haven’t fueled up. So here are 10 ways to recharge your confidence, your creativity, and your mental and physical energy in the face of a culture that wants to keep you down.

MORNING

1. Stretch (10 mins)

If you already have a yoga routine, spend 5-10 minutes (assuming you’ve got limited time) on that. If you don’t, we love Sarah Beth’s free yoga courses on YouTube; try this one to start.

Stretching as soon as you wake up gets your blood flowing and your mind working. Even a couple minutes will pay off throughout the entire day!

2. Drink the biggest glass of water you can find (1 min)

Overnight, we lose around 1-2 pounds in water weight just through sweating and exhaling as you breathe. Replacing this water as soon as you can will boost your brain’s ability to concentrate, recall and form short term memories, and engage in small talk during those early morning meetings if you’ve got them.

3. Write 1-2 sentences about the person you want to be for the day (2 mins)

Set an intention. This only takes a couple of minutes (don’t overthink it), and there’s something about expressing a goal that helps you achieve it! Bonus points if you say it out loud to someone else.

If you feel like jotting this down on your phone or computer, we like Write Honey or SomeDailyWords since they’re totally free, or 750 Words for a premium experience.

AFTERNOON

4. Watch a TedTalk (10 mins)

On your lunchbreak or afternoon break, load up the Ted webpage and pick a random video. This generally takes 5-10 minutes, and you can do it while eating.

These bite-size pieces of information keep your brain active and open, ready to consider and learn about new perspectives. As an added bonus, they’ll give you something new and interesting to chat about with your co-workers or clients.

5. Doodle (5 mins)

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t drawn since kindergarten; a good drawing is not the point of this step. Your mind is active all the time, solving problems, consolidating and saving your experiences, processing emotions, and on and on and on and on. Give the rational side of yourself a break for a minute or two and squiggle some shapes in the margins of your notebook.

Doodling can distract the part of yourself that is preoccupied with worries, letting you destress and refocus on what matters most. Here at The Play Club, we’ve had some of our best ideas while doodling so we know it works.

NIGHT

6. Walk around the block (10 mins)

When you get home, take a walk. Just like your feet need socks to cushion them from your shoes, your inner sanctum needs a buffer from the stressful day you just had. So take 10 minutes and walk it off.

Use these 10 minutes to disconnect from your “productive” self - the self who is only valuable for what she can do for others, or the number of tasks she can achieve in a set amount of time. At home, you’re valuable because all living things are, and you deserve to enjoy your private time as much as you can.

So if you’ve got to send an after hours email to a coworker, schedule a meeting, send a text, or what have you, do it on your walk.

7. Light a candle (1 min)

The space we have is the space we experience our lives within, and we experience life with (at least) five senses. Smell is often overlooked! So if you haven’t already, get yourself a cheap candle or learn to make your own - after all, who knows how expensive candles will be in six months!

8. Listen to guided meditation (5 mins)

If you’ve never meditated before, have no fear! This is a fantastic guided beginner meditation - and it only takes five minutes. At the end of your day, a meditation practice will help to calm your nervous system and kickstart reflection.

Grounding yourself and learning to live life within the present moment also curbs some of that future-looking anxiety.

9. Write yourself a love letter (10 mins)

Remember those 1-2 sentences we wrote as our intention this morning? It’s time to revisit them! Open up your journal of choice, and write 1-2 paragraphs (about 10 minutes of time, you don’t have to show your work!) about how you were able to meet or come as close as you could to your intentions today.

Whether or not you achieved what you set out to do, write these things down as well: 1) what you were proudest of, 2) what you learned, and 3) what you like most about yourself (doesn’t have to be today specific).

10. Have an orgasm (takes less time with a Play Club vibe)

Buzz buzz. Okay you knew this was coming… After all, we ARE a sex toy company. What day is complete without an O? Pull out your favorite toy and lull yourself into a blissful sleep with a powerful orgasm (or two?).

You’re in control of your own life, and your own pleasure. Sweet dreams.
